What to know about propane expiration

Does propane go bad? The simple answer is no. Unlike other fuel sources that degrade over time, propane does not have an expiration date. However, the cylinders in which propane is stored do have a shelf life and must be inspected or replaced periodically.

HOW LONG ARE PROPANE TANKS GOOD FOR?

Portable propane cylinders — like the standard grill tanks — are considered Department of Transportation (DOT) cylinders because they can be transported on roads. As the governing body for these tanks, the Department of Transportation requires cylinder recertification by a trained professional at established intervals to guarantee they are operating safely. PROPANE TANK RECERTIFICATION

To check the details of your propane tank’s certification, look at the collar of your portable propane tank to find the manufacture date. The date stamp (MMYY) is put onto the collar of the cylinder at the time of manufacture. It represents the month and year that a cylinder was produced. The propane cylinder needs to be recertified 12 years from the date of the stamp. The recertification stamp includes the month, year, and the letter E for “External Visual Inspection" (MMYYE). The location’s Requalified Identification Number (RIN) is below the recertification date. Each RIN is assigned by the DOT and is unique to the location where the tank was recertified.

We recommend exchanging your used tank for a fresh tank through our exchange service to ensure your tank is always recertified and in date.
